John: Abiding!
Can a true believer walk away from their faith? Is it possible for believers to forfeit their relationship with Jesus? Can someone accept Christ, then turn away, and no longer be considered God’s child? Let’s examine our passage today to gain a better understanding of what a relationship with Jesus looks like.
John: Finding Peace
During Jesus’ brief years of ministry with the disciples, he was physically their helper. Now, he promises “another Helper” to stay with them forever. Jesus would not leave them as orphans. He said, “I will come to you” (John 14:18). The natural question is, “Jesus, when will this happen?”
John: One Way Out
In John 13-17, we access what I consider sacred ground. John provides us with a seat in the room where Jesus shares very personal spiritual conversations with his disciples just before the crucifixion. The interaction Jesus has with his disciples in this section is unique to John’s Gospel, aside from the prediction of Judas’ betrayal (Matt. 26:21-25) and Peter’s denials (Matt. 26:33-35; Mark 14:30).
John: Betrayal. Denial. Unshakeable Love.
It is painful when someone you believed would always offer support and encouragement turns against you. King David expressed this in Psalm 41, saying, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me” (Ps. 41:9). Jesus used David’s experience to illustrate what Judas was about to do (John 13:18), and later, also Peter.
John: Humble Service
Humble service. Jesus exemplifies humble service. The apostle Paul said that Jesus “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8). In today’s passage, Jesus is on his way to face death, “even death on a cross.”
