John: Humble Service
Humble service. Jesus exemplifies humble service. The apostle Paul said that Jesus “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8). In today’s passage, Jesus is on his way to face death, “even death on a cross.”
John: Glory that Matters
In the first ten chapters of John’s Gospel, we see multiple instances where the religious leaders tried to arrest Jesus. Each time, he escaped their efforts because his “hour” had not yet come (John 2:4; 7:6, 8, 30; 8:20). But now, the time for the cross was upon him (John 12:23).
John: Extravagant Love
In John 12, Jesus begins his final week before the cross. It is six days before Passover, and Jesus has traveled to Bethany, two miles outside Jerusalem, to dine with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus—the man he brought back to life (John 12:1). No doubt, the Twelve and other guests are there.

John wrote his Gospel to demonstrate that Jesus was the Messiah. He mentioned there were many stories to choose from, but he focused on seven powerful “signs”:
John: Do You Believe This?
Besides the Twelve, Jesus also had a few close friends with whom he spent time, giving us a glimpse of some personal moments. These visits provided a break and valuable teaching opportunities. We can also imagine that these stopovers offered necessary respites from the crowds.
John: Eternally Secure!
During the annual celebration of this feast, the Jewish leaders confronted Jesus and asked, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly” (John 10:22-24). Jesus responds:
