DAILY DEVOTION OVERVIEW | May 11-15
1 KINGS 1-8: SOLOMON: WEALTH AND WISDOM
God’s Sovereign Choice: Solomon as King (1 Kgs. 1:5–14)
● God’s purposes prevail over human ambition, as seen in the failure of Adonijah’s self-exaltation.
● God establishes leaders according to his will, not human tradition or birth order.
● God’s calling comes with both identity and responsibility
God’s Gift: Wisdom that Pleases Him (1 Kgs. 3:5–13)
● True wisdom begins with humility and recognition of personal insufficiency.
● God honors requests that prioritize his purposes over personal gain.
● Spiritual discernment is essential for leading and living rightly
God’s Blessing: Wealth, Worship, and Glory (1 Kgs. 4:20; 6:20–22; 8:27)
● God’s blessing can produce both prosperity and influence for his purposes.
● External success and accomplishments cannot contain or replace God’s presence.
● Worship must remain central, even in seasons of abundance and achievement.
1 KINGS 11: SOLOMON: THE COSTLY DRIF
A Privileged Beginning Does Not Guarantee a Faithful Ending (1 Kgs. 3:5–14; 10:23–27)
● Solomon experienced extraordinary blessings from God.
● He led during a season of peace, prosperity, and influence.
● He had every spiritual advantage to remain faithful
A Divided Heart Develops Through Gradual Compromise (1 Kgs. 11:1–6)
● Solomon allowed unchecked desires to shape his decisions.
● He ignored clear warnings from God’s Word.
● He slowly drifted rather than making a single drastic choice
A Costly Drift Leads to Real Consequences (1 Kings 11:9–13)
● Solomon’s sin affected more than just his personal life.
● His leadership failure brought division to the nation.
● His story became a warning for future generations.
1 KINGS 12: REHOBOAM: THE DIVIDED KINGDO
Pride Rejects Godly Wisdom (1 Kgs. 12:6–11)
● Rehoboam chose arrogance over humility.
● He rejected seasoned counsel in favor of peer approval.
● His harsh response revealed a heart disconnected from servant leadership
Division Follows Disobedient Leadership (1 Kgs. 12:16–20)
● The people rebelled when leadership became oppressive.
● A fractured kingdom replaced unity and peace.
● One leader’s failure impacted generations to come
Compromise Leads to Spiritual Corruption (1 Kgs. 12:26–30)
● Jeroboam prioritized security over obedience to God.
● He created false worship to control the people.
● Small compromises quickly turned into national idolatry.
2 CHRONICLES 14-16: ASA: THE TALE OF TWO LIVES
Sin and Pride Lead to Division (1 Kgs. 12:6–20; 14:22–24)
● Rehoboam rejected wise counsel and led with arrogance.
● Both kingdoms quickly embraced idolatry and ungodly practices.
● Spiritual compromise at the top affected the entire nation
Wholehearted Devotion Brings God’s Favor (2 Chron. 14:2–7; 15:16–17)
● Asa courageously removed idols and called the people back to God.
● He led with conviction even when it cost him personally.
● God granted peace and stability during seasons of faithfulness
Failing to Finish Strong Leads to Spiritual Decline (2 Chron. 16:7–12)
● Asa shifted from trusting God to relying on human solutions.
● He resisted correction and responded with anger and oppression.
● His life ended marked by self-reliance instead of dependence on God.
2 CHRONICLES 17-20: JEHOSHAPHAT: THE BATTLE IS THE LORD’
Spiritual Reform Begins with God’s Word (2 Chron. 17; 19)
● Jehoshaphat removed idols and pagan worship from the land.
● He sent leaders, Levites, and priests throughout Judah to teach God’s Word.
● He established judges who were instructed to lead with integrity and the fear of the Lord
Compromise with the World Leads to Spiritual Danger (2 Chron. 18; 20)
● Jehoshaphat formed alliances with wicked kings Ahab and Ahaziah.
● God graciously protected Jehoshaphat even when he made poor decisions.
● Believers must guard against partnerships that pull them away from wholehearted devotion to God.
The Battle Belongs to the Lord (2 Chron. 20)
● Jehoshaphat responded to fear by seeking the Lord through prayer and fasting.
● God reminded Judah that victory would come through his power, not theirs.
● The Lord defeated Judah’s enemies and gave his people peace and rest.
