OVERVIEW

JUDGES: THE STORY OF SELF-COUNSEL
The Danger of Self-Counsel (Judg. 17:6; Jer. 17:9)

  • We naturally trust our own judgment instead of God’s truth.
  • Our hearts can lead us into deception and spiritual drift.
  • Doing what feels right often leads to destructive outcomes.

The Consequences of Disobedience (Judg. 2:1-5, 20-23)

  • Partial obedience still results in spiritual compromise.
  • God allows testing to reveal what is truly in our hearts.
  • Cultural influence can slowly pull us away from faithfulness.

The Call to Choose God’s Way (Josh. 24:15; Deut. 12:28)

  • Following God requires intentional, daily decisions.
  • Spiritual leadership begins in the home and personal life.
  • True blessing comes from doing what is right in God’s eyes.

JUDGES 6-8: GIDEON’S STORY (Part 1)
God Calls Us Despite Our Weakness (Judg. 6:11-16)

  • God often chooses unlikely people to accomplish his purposes.
  • Our view of ourselves is often smaller than God’s view of us.
  • God’s presence is the source of our strength, not our ability.

God Patiently Builds Our Faith (Judg. 6:17-40)

  • God meets us in our doubts and questions.
  • Spiritual growth is often a process, not an instant transformation.
  • Seeking signs can reveal both our need for assurance and our struggle to trust.

God Desires Obedience Before Victory (Judg. 6:25-32; 7:1-7)

  • God calls us to deal with sin close to home first.
  • Obedience may require courage even when fear is present.
  • Victory comes through dependence on God, not human strength.

JUDGES 6-8: GIDEON’S STORY (Part 2)
God Demonstrates His Power Through Human Weakness (Judg. 7:1-12)

  • God reduces our strength so that his power is clearly displayed.
  • Human confidence comes from dependence on God.
  • God often works in ways that defy logic and expectations.

God Strengthens Our Faith Along the Way (Judg. 7:9-15)

  • God meets us in our fears and provides reassurance.
  • Hearing God’s perspective changes how we face our battles.
  • Worship is the proper response when God confirms his promises.

God Desires Lasting Faithfulness, Not Just Momentary Victory (Judg. 8:22-33)

  • A strong finish in one area does not guarantee lifelong faithfulness.
  • Small compromises can become spiritual traps for us and others.
  • Leadership influence can impact generations for good or bad.

JUDGES 13-16: GOD’S STORY IN SAMSON: THE VOW
God’s Promise and the Vow (Judg. 13:1-5)

  • God’s calling begins with his initiative, not our performance.
  • Being set apart means living differently from the surrounding culture.
  • God’s purpose for our lives is intentional and specific.

God’s Presence Is Greater Than Our Weakness (Judg. 13:17-23)

  • God’s power is not limited by human flaws or limitations.
  • Fear is often replaced by confidence when we recognize God’s presence.
  • God reveals himself in ways that call us to worship and humility.

God’s Gifts Must Be Matched with Faithful Obedience (Judg. 13:5; 16:20)

  • Spiritual gifting without discipline can lead to downfall.
  • Compromise often happens gradually, not all at once.
  • Ignoring God’s calling can result in losing spiritual strength and impact.

JUDGES 13-16: GOD’S STORY IN SAMSON: BROKEN AND USED
God’s Sovereignty Works Through Human Weakness (Judg. 13:25; 14:4)

  • God is always working behind the scenes, even when we cannot see it.
  • God can use flawed decisions to accomplish his greater purposes.
  • Our weakness does not limit God’s ability to work through us.

A Lack of Self-Control Leads to Spiritual Compromise (Judg. 16:15-17)

  • Following what is “right in our own eyes” leads us away from God’s best.
  • Repeated compromise dulls our sensitivity to spiritual danger.
  • Sin often progresses slowly until it results in significant consequences.

God’s Grace Restores and Redeems for His Purposes (Judg. 16:28-30)

  • God invites us to return to him, even after failure.
  • True strength is found in dependence on God, not ourselves.
  • God can accomplish a lasting impact through a surrendered life.
