Persecution

Fresh Start: Eternal Life

For the last few days, we have been considering an interaction between Jesus and the rich young man who desired to know how to have eternal life.

The Day of the Lord

Scoffers are great at scoffing. Dripping with sarcasm, they asked the believers, “When is this so-called ‘coming’ that Jesus promised?” Facing persecution, the believers were wondering the same thing. No doubt many were thinking, “Lord, if you are going to come back, this would really be a good time!” So, Peter gives an explanation and encouragement.

Stand Firm

Can you imagine what would be going through your mind if you knew those persecuting the church would soon arrive in your city? No doubt your heart and mind would be filled with anxiety. You would be fearful for yourself, but even more so for your spouse and children. So, Peter wrote two letters to help those facing difficult times to focus their minds on wholesome (pure, unsullied, and sincere) thoughts.

Tough Times Call for Strong Leadership

Tough times call for strong leadership. Many can lead well when things are going well—when business is thriving, everything is good at home, and the church is growing. But when the bottom falls out of the economy, family dynamics are challenging, and the church is filled with worriers instead of worshipers, real leaders step forward to inspire and set the course.

Rejoice in Suffering

The apostle Peter was no stranger to suffering. His time with Jesus opened his eyes to the painful trials that followers of Jesus must endure. He knew what the inside of a Roman prison looked like. He also knew that Roman jailors did not have this job because of their kindheartedness. In today’s passage, Peter tells believers to not be surprised by “fiery trials.”

Set Apart Christ as Lord

Our passage today is often quoted in the context of apologetics—theology used in the defense or proof of Christianity. Certainly, we should always be prepared to explain the main points of Christianity. At the same time, context ultimately determines meaning. The context here addresses a coming persecution when the recipients of this letter may have to suffer for their faith. Peter exhorts them to stand firm for Christ and be ready to profess him as Lord even in the face of imminent suffering.

Responding to the Government

How is a believer supposed to respond to the government? Peter gives us very straightforward instructions.
