He is holy—set apart from all things.

Jobs, possessions, relationships, money, hobbies and a host of other things serve as the “add on” for many worshipers. It’s sad that today’s passage described Israel. But having been warned of sin’s consequences, it’s even more tragic if this passage describes us today.

In the story of Israel’s first king, we learn an important lesson: sometimes God answers our prayers, and we live to regret it. And from this lesson we learn an important application: be very careful what you pray for.

Jephthah’s tragedy is a lesson for us all. Trying to manipulate God always backfires. He will not be used.

How many times do I make decisions without spending time in prayer? How many times do I decide to do or not do something by simply “sampling the provisions” (spreadsheets, test-drives, investment returns, outward appearances, etc.). Decisions require prayer.

Woven into the story of God’s sovereign work that saved and secured the nation of Israel, we see the overwhelming emotions of two brothers being reunited. God’s Word is simply amazing.

Mary concludes her prayer with the reminder that God had not forgotten His people, Israel. His promise to the nation’s ancestors was about to be fulfilled. The Messiah was on His way!
