Humbled

Job was a renowned individual with a diverse and prosperous business, financial stability, and the love and support of a large family. He was generous to widows and those in need, serving as a mentor and respected counselor. He loved God and was a spiritual leader in his community. However, everything fell apart in his life. The man who was on top of the world was brought low.

The king had been humbled. The great Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, who had been compared to a lion (Jeremiah 4:7) and an eagle (Ezekiel 17:3-12), was driven from his kingdom to eat grass like an ox (Daniel 4:33). God got Nebuchadnezzar’s attention! When he came to his senses, he “blessed the Most High” God. We learn a lot about God and ourselves in Nebuchadnezzar’s prayer.

Peter wrote his first letter from Rome in late AD 64/early AD 65 during intense persecution. The mistreatment normally started in the larger cities and then spread throughout the countryside. Peter wrote to believers in what is today Northern Turkey. He wrote to warn and prepare them for the undoubtedly tough times ahead. Peter explained that Jesus was the example of how to respond to suffering.

Jesus humbled himself in obedience. What will it mean for us to humble ourselves before God?
