Gods story in our savior

John: Take Heart!

In today’s passage, Jesus compares his journey through the cross and into the Father’s arms to the process of birth and the joy on the other side. Let’s walk through these verses.

John: The Spirit’s Presence

I've been a Christian for many years, and yet there’s still one thing I can’t quite grasp. Well, many things are hard to grasp, but today I’ll focus on one—God, the Holy One who is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent, lives inside me and interacts with me. That blows my mind!

The setting of today’s passage is in the shadow of the cross. In just a few hours, Jesus will be arrested, beaten, mocked, and crucified. Although Jesus doesn't go into detail here, he tells his disciples that he will be leaving and that they cannot follow him. The disciples are still riding the emotional high from the triumphal entry, which makes it difficult for them to fully understand the gravity and significance of Jesus’ message.

Can a true believer walk away from their faith? Is it possible for believers to forfeit their relationship with Jesus? Can someone accept Christ, then turn away, and no longer be considered God’s child? Let’s examine our passage today to gain a better understanding of what a relationship with Jesus looks like.

John: Finding Peace

During Jesus’ brief years of ministry with the disciples, he was physically their helper. Now, he promises “another Helper” to stay with them forever. Jesus would not leave them as orphans. He said, “I will come to you” (John 14:18). The natural question is, “Jesus, when will this happen?”

John: One Way Out

In John 13-17, we access what I consider sacred ground. John provides us with a seat in the room where Jesus shares very personal spiritual conversations with his disciples just before the crucifixion. The interaction Jesus has with his disciples in this section is unique to John’s Gospel, aside from the prediction of Judas’ betrayal (Matt. 26:21-25) and Peter’s denials (Matt. 26:33-35; Mark 14:30).

John: Betrayal. Denial. Unshakeable Love.

It is painful when someone you believed would always offer support and encouragement turns against you. King David expressed this in Psalm 41, saying, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me” (Ps. 41:9). Jesus used David’s experience to illustrate what Judas was about to do (John 13:18), and later, also Peter.
