Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith: According to His Purpose

There are many circumstances and challenges in our lives that we don’t understand. From our perspective and from our pain, they simply do not make sense. Death comes suddenly and unexpectedly. Illness invades a healthy body, and we watch it waste away. An accident results in chronic pain.

Normally, we are the ones asking, “Why?” But in today’s passage, God turns the tables. Speaking “out of the whirlwind,” God peppers Job with questions. Anytime God begins the conversation with “Dress for action like a man,” you better know that God has something to say, and he wants you to hear it!

Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith: Amazing Love

Years ago, Lori and I were taking our son back to college when, on the way, the traffic came to a sudden halt. After a time of stop-and-go, state troopers directed us off the highway onto the side road, where we drove for several miles. We knew that an accident had occurred on the main road, and it must have been a bad one. It was. A teenage girl, an outstanding athlete in our area, had been killed in a car crash. I am sure her family misses her every day.

Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith: Where is God?

When your world begins to shake, you can go in one of two directions. You can turn to God and trust him to steady you. Or you can turn away from God and conclude he doesn’t care…maybe, he doesn’t even know what to do, so you’re better off on your own. At the end of the day, here’s the question: Which way will you turn?

Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith: Fear Not, Stand Firm

I called it the athletic stance. When I coached, it was the first thing I taught. Feet spread apart just a bit wider than the shoulders, knees slightly bent, leaning forward toward the balls of your feet, and both hands open and held out with elbows bent. I lined up the players, had them get in the athletic stance, and then walked down the line, pushing each player’s shoulders. In that posture, you don’t lose your footing; you keep your balance, and you stand firm. And from that position, you can move with agility whether you are a cornerback or a shortstop.

Light in the Darkness: Experiencing Contentment

The apostle Paul’s life was not some ivory tower professorial existence spewing forth classroom theories and then retreating to his office to read another book. He lived in the real world, learning from real-life experiences. And there, he learned that God provides exactly what we need for whatever he is calling us to do. Paul learned this through experience. And so do we.

ENGAGE: He Strengthens Me

If there was ever a verse torn apart by being ripped out of context so often, today’s passage is it. “Christian” pop-psychology tells us to memorize these words and write them on our bathroom mirror. This verse shows up on the wide receiver’s shoes. Look closely through the quarterback’s facemask; you can make it out on black strips under his eyes. The conclusion most make is this: Whatever I want to do, God will give me the strength to do it. But, always remember this key principle of understanding Scripture: Context ultimately determines the meaning.

Promises: Maker of Heaven and Earth

Until 70 AD, when the temple was destroyed, practicing Jews would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate feasts and worship. During their travels, they would sing songs together. These “Psalms of Ascent” are found in Psalms 120-134. Today’s song reminds us that our great God is the Maker of heaven and earth.
