REFLECTIVE APPLICATIONAL QUESTIONS: ROMANS 5:1—6:23
- Reflect on whether you genuinely find rest in your justification through Jesus—or if you often revert to performance-based spirituality.
- How does the truth of Christ dying instead of you shape your understanding of his grace and your sin? Reflect on the importance of substitution and what it suggests about your identity and security in him.
- Which identity are you living out—Adam’s legacy of sin or Christ’s gift of righteousness? Think about where you’re still allowing guilt, shame, or self-effort to define who you are.
- How can you remind yourself each day that you are unplugged from sin and connected to Jesus? Consider prayers, verses, or actions that can help you live in this truth daily.
- What would it look like this week to surrender every part of yourself (eyes, ears, mouth, hands, feet, mind, desires) as a “slave to righteousness”?
MORE ON “HOPE”…
Bible scholar Robert Utley does excellent work in tracing the meaning of “hope” throughout the New Testament. Sometimes “hope” is expressed in our current experience of faith, and other times “hope” looks forward to Christ’s second coming, our ultimate salvation, and eternal life.
Here is Utley’s “partial list” of the way Paul uses the word “hope.”[1]
- The second coming, Gal. 5:5; Eph. 1:18; Titus 2:13.
- Jesus is our hope, 1 Tim 1:1.
- The believer is to be presented to God, Col. 1:22-23; 1 Thess. 2:19.
- Hope laid up in heaven, Col. 1:5.
- Ultimate salvation, 1 Thess. 4:13.
- The glory of God, Rom. 5:2; 2 Cor. 3:7-12; Col. 1:27.
- The salvation of Gentiles by Christ, Col. 1:27.
- Assurance of salvation, 1 Thess. 5:8-9.
- Eternal life, Titus 1:2; 3:7.
- Results of Christian maturity, Rom. 5:2-5.
- Redemption of all creation, Rom. 8:20-22.
- A title for God, Rom. 15:13.
- Adoption’s consummation, Rom. 8:23-25.
- OT as a guide for NT believers, Rom. 15:4.
- Paul’s desire for all believers, 1 Cor. 1:7.
