THIS WEEK’S DAILY DEVO OVERVIEW: REVELATION 13:1—14:20

Revelation 13:1-10: The Counterfeit Christ

Five Characteristics of the Antichrist

  1. He will be a political leader (Rev. 13:1).
  • The Antichrist is the beast from the sea.
  • Amid worldwide chaos, he will unify nations and form a global political system.
  1. He will be a powerful leader (Rev. 13:2).
  • Satan will give him power and authority (Rev. 13:2).
  • He will wage war against believers worldwide (Rev. 13:7).
  1. He will present himself as a “Christ-like” figure (Rev. 13:3).
  • One of his heads appears to receive a mortal wound, yet is healed—an imitation of the resurrection.
  • The world is amazed and follows the beast. Whether this refers to a revived empire or a healed individual, the effect is the same: The world sees him as a miraculous figure worthy of allegiance.
  1. He will demand and receive worship (Rev. 13:4, 8-10).
  • People will worship the dragon (Satan) and the beast, declaring no one can oppose him.
  • All whose names are not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will bow to him.
  1. He will blaspheme God (Rev. 13:5-6).
  • He will speak “haughty and blasphemous words” throughout his 42-month rule.
  • His verbal attacks target God, his name, and his heavenly dwelling.

Revelation 13:11-18: The False Prophet

Four Characteristics of the False Prophet

  1. The False Prophet will be a religious leader (Rev. 13:11).
  • The False Prophet is the beast from the earth.
  • His teaching will be controlled by Satan and spiritually deceptive.
  1. The False Prophet will direct worship to the Antichrist (Rev. 13:12).
  • He will deceive many.
  • Many will refuse to bow down.
  1. The False Prophet will demonstrate supernatural ability (Rev. 13:13–15).
  • Satan will empower the False Prophet to perform miraculous signs.
  • People will respond to these miracles by worshiping the Antichrist.
  1. The False Prophet will use religion for economic control (Rev. 13:16–18).
  • He will demand that people take a mark for buying and selling.
  • The number 666 will identify those in rebellion against God.

Revelation 14:1-5: The God Who Keeps His Promises

  1. God keeps his promise to protect his people (Rev. 14:1-3).
  • John saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000.
  • God’s protection is physical in this vision, but the eternal protection for all believers is even greater.
  1. God keeps his promise to preserve his people spiritually (Rev. 14:4-5).
  • The 144,000 remain spiritually pure.
  • They stand in truth while the world embraces lies.

Revelation 14:6-13: Invitation. Warning. Consequences.

  1. Heaven’s invitation: Worship the one true God (Rev. 14:6-7).
  • The first angel proclaims the “eternal gospel” to every nation, tribe, language, and people.
  • Even amid judgment, God extends mercy.
  1. Heaven’s warning: All godless systems will fall (Rev. 14:8).
  • The second angel announces the collapse of “Babylon the Great,” representing every political, economic, and religious system that sets itself against God.
  • Our hope must never rest in godless systems but in the Sovereign King.
  1. Heaven’s consequence: rejecting God leads to eternal judgment (Rev. 14:9-13).
  • The third angel delivers the sobering truth: those who worship the beast and receive his mark will face God’s undiluted wrath.
  • Rejecting Christ means bearing that wrath alone. Accepting Christ means eternal life and rest.

Revelation 14:14-20: When the Harvest Comes

  1. The hope of the final harvest — Jesus gathers his own (Rev. 14:14-16).
  • John sees “one like a son of man” seated on the cloud with a sharp sickle—most likely Jesus himself.
  1. The reality of final judgment — God confronts evil fully and finally (Rev. 14:17-20).
  • The second harvest, thrown into “the great winepress of the wrath of God,” reveals the sobering reality of judgment for those who reject Christ.

Greg DeVore and Joe Melaragno do a great job answering the questions submitted on our Daily Devotions. Both are dedicated students of God’s Word who continually research and study. It’s a privilege to partner with them, and we are grateful.

Joe recently read a book called Are We Living in the Last Days? Four Views of the Hope We Share About Revelation and Christ’s Return by Bryan Chapell. Below are the four views I shared earlier, followed by an excerpt from Chapell’s book that highlights fifteen points on which all four views agree. I find this summary very helpful.

Four Views for Interpreting Revelation

Historicist: Interprets the prophecies of Revelation as representing significant historical periods, such as the fall of Rome, the rise of Islam, the Middle Ages, and the Reformation. In this viewpoint, the Antichrist is seen as the popes of the Roman Catholic Church.

Preterist: Holds that the prophecies in Revelation have already happened. According to this viewpoint, the “great tribulation” occurred in the first century, with figures like Nero symbolizing the Antichrist. Partial preterists believe that Jesus’ second coming and final judgment are future events. Full preterists assert that all prophecies, including the second coming, have been fulfilled.

Idealist: Believes all the prophecies of Revelation are symbolic and convey timeless spiritual truths, not literal events—past or future.

Futurist: Holds to the prophecies of Revelation (particularly Revelation 4-22) occurring in the future and will be fulfilled before Jesus' second coming.

15 Aspects of the Hope All Christians Share
The following is from Bryan Chapell’s Are We Living in the Last Days? Four Views of the Hope We Share About Revelation and Christ’s Return (Baker Book, 2024), 194-196.

  1. The coming of Christ's kingdom. In the Lord's Prayer, we pray that God's kingdom will come because we believe the completion of God's rule on earth through Christ is still in the future. We consider the prophecies of Scripture concerning this future kingdom to be true and vital for our conviction that our God is being faithful to his plan for his people.
  2. Literal interpretation. We share the conviction that our understanding of the end times, including our millennial views, should be determined by the literary context, content, and nature of the original author's writing as intended by the Holy Spirit.
  3. Physical return. We all believe that Jesus will physically return in power and great glory from his present station in heaven to rescue his people and establish his kingdom.
  4. Millennium. All Bible-believing views of the millennium teach that there is a period in God's plan, prior to Christ's final return, in which his influence dominates, and Satan's influence diminishes.
  5. Apostasy and tribulation. We all believe a time of great evil, unbelief, and tribulation for Christ’s people will immediately precede the physical return of Christ, but then he will come to rescue his people and restore our world.
  6. Antichrist. We all believe that this period of great evil and tribulation will involve the appearance of an antichrist who will pose as an agent of good before generating great evil against God's people, but he will not ultimately succeed.
  7. Armageddon. We all believe that Christ will engage in a great battle against his enemies to combat forces that oppose his rule and oppress his people. Jesus wins!
  8. Rescue and rapture. We all believe that Jesus will come to rescue his people from this world's evil and rebellion, and that this rescue will involve "catching up" dead and living believers to be with him as he establishes his kingdom.
  9. Resurrection. We share the belief that this mortal life is not the final estate for our souls or our bodies. Rather, those who have died in Christ shall be raised in newness of life when our Lord returns. The simple message that death does not win is the core hope of the gospel, teaching that no failure is final, no evil has victory, and no sin can destroy a life united to Christ.
  10. Imminent return. We all believe that sufficient aspects of biblical prophecy have been fulfilled to make it possible that Jesus could come in the near future – or at any time. His Word makes it clear that we are already living "in these last days" (Heb. 1:2).
  11. A place for Jews. We all believe that the promise of salvation by faith that God made to Abraham and his descendants is available to Jews in every era and that there are ethnic Jews who will claim that promise in Christ's eternal kingdom.
  12. Judgment of the living and the dead. We all believe that all people will stand before the judgment seat of God to be judged according to their spiritual status. Believers will be judged on the basis of Christ's righteousness that covers their sin, and unbelievers will be judged according to their works that will condemn them before a holy God. Those who believe in Christ will enter his eternal kingdom of light, and those who do not will be cast into the outer darkness of hell.
  13. Satan and his allies defeated. We share the belief that the judgment of God will include the completion of his Genesis 3:15 promise to crush Satan by casting him permanently into hell with those who have followed him.
  14. New heaven and earth. We share the hope that the eternal destiny of all believers is intimate fellowship in body and spirit with our Savior in his eternal kingdom, where there is no more darkness, pain, sin, or tears. There, all is made perfect in the light and love of the Lamb who was slain, who will then reign over all forever.
  15. Shared rule. We share the hope that, in ways we cannot yet fully understand, Christ's loved ones not only will judge the angels (1 Cor. 6:3) but also will rule with our Savior over his kingdom as our union with him becomes complete and his heart fills ours (2 Tim. 2:11-12).
