Refuge

  Moses was about to die. He gathered the leaders of the tribes of Israel around him to give them his last blessing. When he came to the tribe of Asher, Moses told the people,

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.

-Deuteronomy 33:27 (NIV)

“Refuge” or “dwelling place” comes from the Hebrew word maon. This name for God explains his protection and care. God is the One we run to for safety. This tender expression for God is described in Isaiah 40:11(NIV). The prophet says, “[God] tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart…” Like a shepherd, God carries us close to his heart with his strong everlasting arms. God’s arms are holding you up. God cradles you like a mother cradles her newborn baby. His grasp on you is eternal. He will never let you go. Talking Points

• Thank God for being your refuge—the One you run to for safety and protection. Thank God for cradling you close to his heart with everlasting arms.
• As parents we can’t always be present with our children. Teach them this truth about God. When they are fearful, God carries them close to his heart with strong eternal arms.

Heavenly Father, I run to you, my refuge. I run to you for safety and protection. I need you to hold me today. I need you to cradle me in your arms and hold me close to your heart. Let me feel your grasp. Thank you for never letting me go. And please help me to live in this truth throughout today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
