Fulfilled

Matthew 5:17-18
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
The Old Testament was clear that a new day was coming. However, when it would come and what it would look like were not detailed, so when Jesus arrived there was a mixture of excitement and concern. The religious Jews wondered if Jesus had come to overturn their way of worship.
In today’s passage Jesus made it clear that He did not come to dismantle the Old Testament. In fact, He came to complete it. He came to add the finishing work.
- The Old Testament called for an annual sacrifice. Jesus sacrificed Himself once for all.
- The Old Testament called for a perfect sacrifice. Jesus was sinless.
- The Old Testament contains nineteen direct prophecies about the coming Messiah. Jesus fulfilled them all.
- The Old Testament told of a suffering servant. Jesus came to die on a cross.
- Jesus transitioned the physical kingdom to a spiritual one.
