THIS WEEK’S DAILY DEVO OVERVIEW: JOHN 15:18—JOHN 17:26
John 15:18-16:4: A Hostile World
-
Jesus prepared his disciples for rejection and persecution, explaining that the world’s hatred is ultimately based on its rejection of him.
- Jesus revealed sin and showed divine authority through his actions, leaving people without any excuse.
- Jesus warned about upcoming challenges to prepare his disciples.
John 16:4-15: The Spirit’s Presence
-
Jesus' departure was not abandonment, but a necessary step for the Helper—the Holy Spirit—to come and indwell each believer.
-
The Holy Spirit opens blinded hearts to see:
- Sin is rebellion against God, not just bad behavior.
- Righteousness in the risen Christ.
-
Judgment because Satan is defeated, and future judgment is coming.
- The Spirit doesn't act independently but consistently communicates Jesus’ truth, glorifying him and guiding us deeper into his Word and will.
John 16:16-33: Take Heart!
- The disciples were confused by Jesus’ words (“a little while”), which shows how God’s work can sometimes seem unclear in the moment—but understanding comes over time.
- Jesus compares his death and resurrection to childbirth—painful but ultimately leading to indescribable joy.
- Although the disciples would scatter and Jesus would be crucified, he promises peace not based on circumstances, but because of his victory over sin.
John 17:1-12: The High Priestly Prayer (Part 1)
- Jesus begins his prayer by asking the Father to glorify him through his suffering, death, and resurrection, which will give eternal life to all who believe. His completed mission shows the greatness of God’s redemptive plan.
- Jesus states that he has revealed the Father to the disciples by sharing God’s words with them.
- Jesus now prays for their protection and unity, affirming that his glory is displayed in them as they live out his message. Though Jesus is leaving, his presence will remain visible through their faith and obedience.
John 17:13-26: The High Priestly Prayer (Part 2)
- Jesus prays for his disciples' protection—not from the world, but from the evil one. He asks the Father to sanctify them in truth, which is God’s Word.
- Jesus prays for future believers—everyone who would believe through the message of the apostles. His greatest desire is unity among his followers, modeled after the perfect unity between the Father and the Son.
- Jesus concludes his prayer, longing for us to be with him and witness his glory. He desires that the love of the Father be in us, just as he lives in us.
